Frequently Asked Questions

1: I am a positive person and want to take pro-active steps to circumvent the negatives imposed upon me as a denture technician. How can I  legally provide a compassionate service directly to the denture wearing public without the interference of a go-between?

Many dental technicians are frustrated from having to work through a go-between system that is counter-productive, often wasting their time with avoidable retries & remakes, frustrating the patient who is suspecting that neither yourself nor the dentist knows what either are doing, and having to fight with (or bribe) a dentist to get paid for the work he/she ordered from you on contract.

You may become a Denturist. In South Africa, we already have initial recognition in law, but more needs to be done before you may get a recognized training opportunity and register as a Clinical Dental Technologist. You can join our Association and work concertedly towards that goal!

2: Why should I join The Society?

The Society for Clinical Dental Technology exists solely to establish the Denturist profession in South Africa, to achieve legal recognition and establish clinical training to become Clinical Dental Technologists (Denturists), in the interests of our members and the communities they serve. Browse the About Us area to find out more about where we come from and our objectives. Join us and become part of history as we make this a reality together.

3: Who may join the Society for CDT?

All dental technicians in South Africa who are registered with the SADTC to do the work of a dental technician, has the potential to get qualified as a Denturist and is eligible to become a member of The Society for Clinical Dental Technology. Student dental technicians and retired dental technicians are also eligible to join. We accept your registration number from the SADTC as proof that you are eligible to do the work of a dental technician. Your  registration number from the SADTC will therefore be required to register membership of The Society for Clinical Dental Technology (SCDT). Qualified denturists working elsewhere but have aspirations to practice their profession in South Africa, may also join membership of The Society.

4: How much is the Annual Membership fee?

We appreciate that dental technicians have to pay a license to practice to the SADTC, and a voluntary membership fee to DENTASA to look after their professional interests. For that reason our membership fee have been kept low to accommodate the other expenses. The annual membership fee is currently R400-00, but paid-up members of DENTASA gets a 25% discount and can join for only R300-00, for a limited period only. We will appreciate additional donations from any source to boost our operational capacity.

5: Why is there a different fee for DENTASA Members?

We recognize DENTASA as the Professional Association looking after the interests of all dental technicians. Members of DENTASA are pro-actively involved in the maintenance of the profession and are encouraged to join The Society as well, to spearhead and implement the establishment of Denturism as another option for future professional development. DENTASA is regarded as an appreciated alliance, and has a stake in everything that impact on dental technology and the manufacture of artificial oral appliances. DENTASA is not directly involved with the drive to implement Denturism in South Africa. That prerogative remains to be the specialized focus and purpose of The Society!

6: When will Denturism become a reality in South Africa?

That will depend on the commitment, innovation and efforts of our members to reach the objectives as set out in our Constitution. Unfortunately it is impossible to commit to time frames, because there is no clear route of implementation and we have a daunting opponent in the monopoly holder that opposes our initiative. We are however, convinced that we have the tenacity to meet the challenge and have the successful examples of our international colleagues as inspirational motivation.  We will need a more powerful membership base to lobby effectively for public support. Financial restraints have till now been an inhibiting factor. With more committed members assisting in the various initiatives, we can reach our objectives sooner.

7: Could my dentist-clients find out that I am a member of The Society and of my ambitions to become a Denturist, and boycott my laboratory because the initiative could eventually result in competition for dentists in the business of supplying dentures to the public?

For exactly that reason and unfortunate history, we have a policy of Privacy of Membership. Therefore your membership to The Society for Clinical Dental Technology will only be accessible by fellow members and The Society will expect all members to honor that privacy accordingly.

8: How do I become a Member of The Society?

Simply print the Application form, complete and fax or post it to us. Upon receipt of a membership application, accompanied by receipt of the prescribed annual membership fee, the Secretary will submit such application to the Executive Committee for acceptance. If accepted, you will be duly informed and a unique membership number issued. If your application is not approved for what ever reason, you will be fully refunded.
